A Quick Guide to Grammar and Punctuation The following "hit list" addresses some of the most common mistakes found in student writing. If you are not sure what the basic parts of speech are, such as verbs and pronouns, please refer to the Drop-in Centre Parts of Speech handout. 1) Write in full sentences Make sure that each sentence includes: A subject (which says what or who the sentence is about). A predicate (which says something about the subject and includes a verb that says what the subject is or does, and places it in the past, present, or future). For example: Lawrence (subject) wrote about relationships between men and women (predicate). (verb = wrote) A sentence may contain a lot of additional information, but must retain the basic formula of subject and predicate: Lawrence commonly wrote about relationships between men and women, specifically addressing the tensions and power struggles that, he thought, defined them. 2) Make sure that verbs agree with subjects If the subject of your sentence is singular, make sure that its verb is also singular. Likewise, if the subject is plural, make sure that its verb is plural too. Right: Lawrence and Fielding are (plural) The group was... (singular) Tesco retains...
